@ the college museum

our college has a museum dedicated to articles, journals, models, anecdotes etc. related to dentistry and its off-shoot branches....
most of the exhibits are dull and boring, as all things related to dentistry are...
but one thing that caught my attention while i was posted in the Dept of Preventive & Community Dentistry (it is responsible for taking care of the museum), was the following advertisements, posted in the 'humor' section.

who we are to children

While still a dental student, I took a walk and encountered three little girls playing with a ball.  The ball got away from them, and I retrieved it.  We played ball for a few minutes, and the conversation turned to Diwali coming up soon.  One of the girls said she wanted to try leaving sweets in her mouth all night, and I told her that was a bad idea, likely to cause cavities.
She said that you don't need to brush your teeth, and that her friend only brushed her teeth the day before visiting the dentist, and she never got cavities.
When I disagreed she said "How do you know".
I said "I am a dentist", then the girls dropped the ball and ran away....

No charge for this extraction!

This happened when i was posted in the Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
An elderly gentleman who spoke broken English came in with a very loose tooth, explaining that he had tried to remove it himself but it was just too painful.  After determining that the tooth had lost nearly all bony support from gum disease, we numbed it up and allowed five minutes to complete anesthesia.  The patient discovered that he was numb enough to wiggle the tooth out himself, so he made a quick exit out the back door without saying anything!
We heard some of this, and made it to a window in time to wave goodbye.  We figured that the patient probably had a financial hardship, so we never billed him.
To tell the truth, we never bill anyone for a simple extraction, but that man did not seem to know that.....

how the dentist in me came into being...

i would never have chosen this proffession.
one fine day, i came to know that i could not wait long enough...i had to do something with my life. something worthwhile...for a change.
then B.D.S (Bachelor in Dental Surgery) came calling. i took to dentistry just like a duck takes to water.
and the rest is history....
i joined the AECS Maaruti College of DEntal Sciences & Research Centre in Bangalore...worked my ass off and topped 1st year...(yay!!)

the following years passed away in a daze....other things like booze, love and other drugs took over...and i started to while away my time, keeping in mind that i had to become a dentist...no matter watever path i follow to receive that end...
i bunked classes, bullied juniors into finishing my assignments, buttered up professors to 'approve' my practical work in the clinics...in short, i had found a way to reach my goal and that too, 'the smart way', not the hard way...
when i passed my final year, there could have been no-one happier that day, because i knew i had done it, without sweating it out, like the others....hehehe
but little did i knw, that my life,s ordeal was only beginning.

(watch out for my other posts...my story is just beginning)
